What Kind of Night Vision Should You Buy?
It depends on whether you need to know something happened at night or need to identify who. Three different technologies answer those differently, and they are often described with the same phrase on retail listings.
Infrared night vision uses invisible IR illumination and produces black-and-white footage. It is unobtrusive, costs the least, and is fine when you need to see that a gate opened. It cannot give you the color of a shirt or a vehicle.
Conventional full-color night vision keeps color after dark by running supplemental white light. You get usable color detail, at the cost of a lit-up frontage all night and the power that goes with it.
