What Should I Do If I Fail to Configure the Tapo Devices

Configuration Guide
Last updated: October 29, 2026

The Tapo app guides you through setup step by step, but setup can stall when the device is not in pairing state or when the app cannot find or connect it. This guide shows how to check the device state and what to do at each step.

Key Takeaways

  • Most setup failures come from the device not being in pairing state, so reset it first and confirm that the LED blinks red and green alternately.
  • The app decides the setup method: Wi-Fi models ask you to join the device's own network, while Bluetooth models are found without changing your phone's Wi-Fi.
  • During Wi-Fi setup, the phone must join the device's network with mobile data and VPN turned off, and Tapo devices connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
  • For Bluetooth models that are not found, restart and reset the device in the way that matches its power source, then wait a few minutes before retrying.
  • Setting up one device at a time, with the other devices powered off, prevents them from interfering with device discovery.

Before You Start: Check the Setup Method and Pairing State

Step 1: Select the Correct Model in the App

When you add the device in the Tapo app, select the correct model as the app asks. The app then decides the setup method, and the steps you follow depend on it. Check which prompt appears on the screen.

Models configured via Wi-Fi: the app asks you to put the device into pairing state and join the device's own Wi-Fi network from your phone's Wi-Fi settings, then return to the app.

The app asks you to join the Tapo device's Wi-Fi network, such as Tapo_Cam_XXXX.

Models configured via Bluetooth: the app searches for the device by itself and shows a Bluetooth icon on the searching screen, so you do not need to change the phone's Wi-Fi network. Door locks are usually set up this way.

The app searches for a Bluetooth door lock and shows a Bluetooth icon.

Step 2: Reset the Device to Pairing State

Whichever method the app uses, follow the app prompts and confirm that the device is in pairing state before you start. If it is not, reset the device first. For the reset method of your model, refer to the User Guide on the model's support page.

For most Tapo devices, the LED blinks red and green alternately after a reset. The LED behavior differs between models, so check the User Guide when it does not match. Some models also give a sound prompt: on a door lock, for example, a buzzer beep or a voice prompt after you press and hold the reset button means that the device has reset and is ready for setup.

If you have several devices to set up, power on only the device you are working on and unplug or power off the others for now, so that they do not interfere with device discovery.

Case 1: Can't Find Your Smart Device

Models Configured via Wi-Fi

Make sure you choose the correct model in the Tapo app.

On iOS devices, make sure Local Network permission is enabled for the Tapo app.

Keep the phone next to the device, and turn off VPN and Mobile Data (or Cellular Data on iOS).

Make sure the phone is connected to the device's own Wi-Fi network.

Notes:

1) The SSID should be TP-Link_xxxx_xxxx or Tapo_xxxx_xxxx. On a camera, for example, it is Tapo_Cam_XXXX. The last four characters are the last four digits of the device's MAC address.

2) On iOS, the phone shows "No Internet Connection" after it joins the device's Wi-Fi. Ignore the message and return to the app to continue.

3) On Android, the phone may warn that the Wi-Fi network is unsecured or unprotected. Select "Connect anyway" (or "Keep using this Wi-Fi" / "Stay connected") and continue.

Models Configured via Bluetooth

Make sure the device is powered on and the system LED lights up.

Move your phone or tablet closer to the device.

Restart and reset the device. For a device that stays plugged in, unplug the power adapter and plug it back in. For a device with a removable battery, such as a door lock, take the battery out and put it back in. For a device with a built-in battery, such as a battery camera, press and hold the Power button to turn the device off and then on; for the button of your model, refer to the User Guide on the model's support page.

Wait a few minutes for the device to finish booting.

Turn Bluetooth off and back on in your phone's settings, then try again.

If the device still does not show up, install the Tapo app on another phone or tablet, sign in with the same account, and try adding the device again. This tells you whether the Bluetooth of your phone is the cause.

Case 2: Can't Find Your Wi-Fi Network

If your home Wi-Fi network does not appear in the list, try the following:

Move the smart device closer to the router, because the home Wi-Fi signal may be too weak at the current position.

Make sure the home Wi-Fi network is a 2.4 GHz network, since Tapo devices do not support a 5 GHz connection.

If the router's SSID is not listed automatically, tap RESCAN in the upper-right corner to refresh the Wi-Fi list.

If the router's SSID is hidden, choose Other and enter the SSID and password manually.

Reset the device as described in its QIG or User Guide, then run the setup process again.

Case 3: Unable to Connect Your Smart Device to the Wi-Fi Network

If the device cannot join your home network, check the following:

Make sure you selected the correct home Wi-Fi network and entered the correct Wi-Fi password. If either one is wrong, tap Choose a Network and select the network again.

Make sure the smart device is within the Wi-Fi range of the router.

Check whether the router has a maximum number of connected devices (maximum clients) limit enabled. If the limit is reached, new devices may fail to connect, so disconnect unused devices or increase the limit in the router settings. Guest networks often have this limit.

If the problem persists, reset the device as described in its User Guide or QIG, then set it up again.
